What is a Doula? (and why "Parens et puella?)
Doulas have been around since the beginning of time. In fact, "doula" derives from the Greek word "doule", meaning "handmaiden" or "female helper". The modern usage of this word means a woman experienced in childbirth. She provides advice, information, emotional support, and comfort to a mother before, during, and after the birth. She cannot diagnose or treat any illness or condition.
The Virgin Mary is one of the oldest known doulas, as we see her speedily arrive at her cousin Saint Elizabeth's side in her time of need in the Gospels. "Parens et Puella" comes from A Hymn to the Virgin, and means "mother and maiden". How fitting!

Meet your doulaHello! I'm Caroline.
My passion for birth, babies, and motherhood had its earliest roots in college, when I interned at a crisis pregnancy center. But attending a friend's homebirth made me realize how much I loved this area of womanhood. I decided to certify as a postpartum doula, and later a birth doula, so I could step further into the God-given role of women: serving others. I trained with a Catholic program that taught me how to serve women as Our Lady served Saint Elizabeth in her pregnancy. Everything I do for a client will be through a completely Catholic lens and a loving heart.

Testimonials
"I would recommend Caroline as a doula to anyone looking for physical and spiritual support during and after birth. I am a VBAC after having a C-Section with twins. After several successful vaginal births in the hospital, I finally found a midwife willing to do a home birth with me. I was thrilled to have Caroline there to assist me! When the labor became intense I began to be overwhelmed with fear. Caroline did a fantastic job of calmly encouraging me and helping me with prayers specific to fear. The birth went a little wonky when at 9 cm we realized the baby was breech. After a successful birth, my midwife told me what an incredible job she thought Caroline did. She was very impressed and hoped she would consider a career in midwifery. I assume that's the highest praise a doula can get!"
